Alinda while at a tender age received her most saddening news from her parents that she will not join school but rather help them out in the garden to raise food for the family. At 7 year she got support from her uncle to study who later passed on while she was in Primary one.

At the age of 10, Alinda was picked up by a distant Cousin Sister who supported her to primary two and then withdrew her out of school to have her take care of her newly born child claiming that Alinda’s parents did the same to her when Alinda was born.

Alinda’s dream is to join a boarding school or a children’s home where she can concentrate and study to become a doctor. Alinda wants to provide health care to sickly poor people unable to seek help in expensive hospitals. Alinda is a Christian 11 year old Primary two pupil talented in Music, dance and drama.

Ssentongo is aged 13 years and stays with local authorities because his father passed away while he was still young due to HIV. Ssentongo’s mother abandoned him on the village after his father passed away because she was entering a new marriage with a man who wanted nothing to do with Ssentongo. The abandoned young boy stayed for a while with an old woman whom he called “Grand mom” but she gave him away to the local authorities because she was unable to take care of him independently given her age.

Through these hardships Ssentongo leaves a reality of rejection and feels no one wants anything to do with him. Even though life was not easy for this boy, he never gave up on the love to sturdy. Ssentongo is now in Primary Six and hopes to find a sponsor to push him through his education. Ssentongo is a Christian academically talented young boy with a dream of becoming a pilot and becoming a professional footballer.

Ruth believes her mother abandoned her at her step-mother’s home right after her birth. This 12 year old Ruth now leaves with her father, step-mother and step-sisters. The entire family of seven lives in a single rented room in Wabigalo a Kampala Suburb. Ruth’s father is an alcoholic who neglected his entire family and left them in the total care of their mother.

As Ruth’s step-mother struggles to make ends meet, psychologically and physically tortured Ruth has been turned into a house girl. Ruth growing up with a step-mother has suffered the feeling of being lonely and she feels isolated from the family as the step-mother efforts to have her real children taken care of therein neglecting the needs of little Ruth. Ruth attends school in the nearby community school but often sent away from school for not paying her school fees. On so many occasions this primary five girl has been forced to beg from strangers in order to have her scholastic materials. Ruth wants to study and become a doctor so that she can save lives.

Vannesa, Cissy, Mercy and Blessing are siblings with both parents alive. The needs of these four sisters are singularly met by their mother who is a small scale earner and a door to door domestic worker in Wabigalo village, a suburb in Kampala. The mother labours daily to bring bread to the table through washing clothes and doing house chores for other families.

Sometimes, the mother cannot avoid taking her four daughter to work with her in order to raise their school fees which usually ends into failure. Their father contributes almost nothing to the needs of the family as he is an alcoholic. Due to the miserable living conditions at home, the four sisters have as-well turned into house helps in the neighbouring slums in order to earn food. Their education is a burden too big for their mother and so they spend some days off school for school fees. Even when faced with uncertainty to complete school, the girls have remained pushing to stay in school with hope that God will create a way for them.

Being talented, and academically a strong girl has not brought guarantee for Lucky to stay in school, lucky is the first born out of five children, four girls and one boy. Her mother is a small scale entrepreneur who has started making snacks for breack fast to sell around her locality.

Her husband the father has another wife with two girls which made his expenditure grow yet his income was too low. He was a private school teacher teaching music but quit his job for the little pay he was getting which rendered him jobless. He left responsibility of caring for the kids to their mothers. He is a peasant who can barely buy food for the family.

The education of these children is not an assurance as every term they survive from not being allowed to do exams on the mercies of their school. These girls love Music Dance and God. Sometimes they move around the streets of Kampala dancing for people for a meal. Their prayer is that God hears their prayers and they get a well-wisher to sponsor their education. Lucky loves to pray and hopes to be a doctor when she grows.

Name: Lugajju Paul

Paul is the last born out of 6 children, the only boy in his
family.  Paul is in primary 3 in a
public/ government school. Paul has grown with only his mother after their
father dumped them for another woman in Jinja. He left Paul’s mum pregnant 10 years ago and left all the responsibility of taking care of the children to the
expectant mother. Paul has never seen his father from birth to date. The mother of these six children has tried all she could to raise her children but her income was not enough to put food on the table and pay tuition for all the
children. As a result the older girls ended up dropping out of school at an
early age to help their mother find what to eat. Paul if not helped risks
dropping out of school like his elder sisters. His dream is to be an Engineer
so he can build a house for his mother. He always prays to God for a sponsor
who can make his dream come true. He loves to dance for God and his favorite Bible verse is proverbs 15:3.

Thirteen year old Tipete Sylvia is in Primary Seven and lives in Kampala district. Her father passed away to an unknown illness when Sylvia was in primary five. After the death of the family’s bread winner, Sylvia and her siblings were left in the care of their stressed mother who introduced them to casual child labour of scrap collection for sale to earn money. In search for education all the seven siblings of Sylvia were shared among relatives and that’s how Sylvia found herself with the auntie of ten children whom she currently stays with. Life is not easy in this home for Sylvia as she is thought of last in the home but she still presses on.

 

Sylvia hopes to get a merciful sponsor to be able to study become a lawyer so that she can become a public defendant for children that are oppressed and suffering from injustices. Sylvia is a choir member at her church.

Cynthia is in senior one, she loves reading story books, dancing and singing. Her father is politician, his mind was eaten up with politics. They are seven children and Cynthia is the second last child. Their father stopped paying their school fees so that he invests in his political career of becoming a parish councilor. He only buys food at home. Cynthia’s mother who sells cassava, took her to a public school which is a two hour walk from home. Cynthia sometimes misses classes due to the long journey and at a certain point she felt like dropping out of school. Money that her mummy gets from selling cassava can only buy books for the children. Cynthia’s prayer is that if she gets a sponsor to help her in studies. She will be happy that her dream of becoming an Air hostess will come true.

Name: Seguya Brighton

Brighton is fourteen years and in Senior two. He loves listening to Music and hopes to become a bank manager. Brighton was born to a Seventeen year old child-mother after dropping out of school due to failure to pay school fees. This heartbroken girl (Brighton’s mother) faced with challenges in accessing basic need like food and menstrual pads was lured by her peers into sex for money to acquire the former hence finding herself pregnant at such a tender age. The man responsible denied the pregnancy and fled off living the little girl all by her own. After the birth of Brighton, psychologically tortured mother of Brighton fled to Saudi Arabia living her baby in the care of his grandmother. A year later Brighton’s mother’s way about could not be tracked and Brighton is not sure whether she is still alive. At the age of ten, Brighton was invited to attend his deceased father’s burial, a man he did not have a chance to meet until he was in the coffin. Since then Brighton almost lost all hope of studding because his grandmother and sole care taker has come of age and sickly not sure of living on to the next day. He is not sure where his mother’s academic fate is not coming for him. His prayer is to be found by some guardian angel to help support him to school.

Eight-year-old fortunate lost her father at four. She has
five siblings and all stay with her mother. After Fortunato’s father passed
away, her mother remarried and moved in with another man. Fortunate has been greatly affected by the daily fights between her mother and step-father. The domestic violence into this home affected her behavior as she feels insecure and alone at all time, sometime her mother would not know how to handle her marriage fights and ends up beating this little girl inappropriately.

 

Later her mother and step-father separated but fortunate remained a link between the two. After along community criticism, the step-father decided to take Fortunate to start school a support Fortunate does not guarantee will stay for long. Fortunate is currently in primary one and wants to be a nurse and a political leader, she hopes this will help her defend the less fortunate.
